“Is everything all right?” Everett sat beside her on the bridge of the Wyvern. It was late but since her transformation last month he often sought her out. Yaren didn’t mind. His familiar presence soothed the strangeness of her new circumstances.

She jerked one shoulder, an indicator of nonchalance she’d observed in others. “Yes, everything’s fine.”

“Did something upset you? You seem angry.”

“I’m not angry at anything in particular. I simply prefer this emotion to the others.”

“Really.” He quirked a brow. “Why?”

“It feels stronger than the rest. More in control.”

Everett’s whispered laugh took her by surprise. Not mocking. She’d heard that kind elsewhere. It sounded like true humor.
